The New York Historical —

Giving women’s history the digital platform it deserves.

the ask

Evolve a beloved resource into a platform as powerful as its content.

Women & The American Story (WAMS) initially launched as the digital companion to an exhibit at The New York Historical and quickly became something far more meaningful: a comprehensive curriculum platform. Now, WAMS is equipping teachers with primary sources, life stories, and lesson frameworks to bring women’s history into classrooms across the country, but on a digital platform it had outgrown. It was time to give WAMS — and the teachers who rely on it — the platform they deserve.

the insight

The biggest barrier to teaching inclusive history
isn’t intent — it’s time.

The average teacher doesn’t have spare hours to hunt for supplementary materials, vet their accuracy, and adapt them for the classroom. When time runs out — and it always does — they reach for what’s easiest. But traditional curriculums fail to tell the full story. WAMS had 327 primary sources, 194 life stories, and nearly 2,000 unique vocabulary words to fill that void. What it needed was a platform that made all of that easy to use.

the solution

Making women’s history the easy choice, not the extra one.

We evolved WAMS from a limiting, digital-textbook experience into a smart, beautifully intuitive library — designed to pull you in, point you in the right direction, and make exploring one of history’s most important untold stories feel less like homework and more like discovery. The redesign touched every layer: brand, art direction, content architecture, and the CMS powering it all.

A seamless design system powers effortless discovery and exploration from screen to syllabus.

Dynamic content modules power connections from today’s headlines to historic context.

THE RESULTS

A teaching companion that curates and delivers ready-to-use lessons.

We turned over 300 pages into 500 classroom-ready resources.

Nearly 200 Life Stories contextualized with over 800 historic images.
